Mold can be a frustrating and dangerous thing to deal with. It’s important to know what to do if you suspect mold is in your property. At ACR Environmental Consultants, we want to make sure you’re prepared.

If you see or smell mold on your property, then you’ll want to take the following steps:

  1. Contact a consultant for air quality testing. A mold consultant will provide you with the initial assessment to determine if there is actually a mold problem within your home. Your mold consultant must be certified to perform this task according to Texas state law, so make sure you do your research carefully.
  2. Receive a protocol written by your consultant. If the assessment shows that you have a mold problem, then your consultant will write up a remediation plan so that you know how to proceed.
  3. Hire a state-licensed contractor to handle remediation. Not just anyone can handle mold remediation; only licensed contractors are allowed to perform this task over 25 contiguous feet. These contractors will have the background and skills necessary in order to safely remove mold from your home.
  4. Obtain a Certificate of Mold Remediation. Your contractor must provide you with this certificate no later than ten days after the remediation is complete. The consultant who initially performed the assessment must also sign the certificate. Once you have this, however, it declares your building mold-free, and you’ll want to keep it in your files for future reference.
